South Korea is researching on developing new functional textiles to be used in producing light, radar-proof and combat-efficient armed forces uniforms, code-named 'Stealth Fabric'.

The government has earmarked 58 billion Won for the project. The uniform material along with being invisible to enemy radar will also have functionalities like being water-proof and cold-resistant.

The ministries of Defense and Knowledge Economy are cooperating in the venture and along with fulfilling a need of the armed forces will also help boost prospects of the textile sector in South Korea.

The South Korean military spends an average of 300 billion Won on providing uniforms and various textiles based gear per year, out of which 80 billion Won worth of material is imported from overseas countries.

Though the import content may be high in the radar-proof uniforms in the initial stages, the government plans to develop them locally as the project progresses, so as to generate export revenues in the future.
