Several thousands of garment workers, true to their word, observed a mass strike and walked down the streets on Monday, while agitating against the minimum wage structure in the industry. However, the industry and unions both presented a different picture as regards success of strike.
Workers' representatives claimed that, over 68,000 workers of 53 establishments participated in the strike; other 52,000 workers were barred by their employers from joining the strike.
Further, whereas, on one hand the union representatives claimed the strike to be a success and are hopeful that the number of workers joining the strike would increase as the strike prolongs the factory owners assert that, the number of workers partaking in the strike as stated by the unions, to be pure exaggeration.
