Abdus Salam Murshedy, President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), while speaking to the media after a meeting with the Home Minister Shahara Khatun, revealed that, though the new wage structure has become effective since November, but the workers would start getting wages and other benefits as per the new structure only from December.

He also stated that, all the outstanding dues payable to workers along with other allowances would be paid to them, as per the old wage structure.

Over the past few days, the RMG workers have been seen staging protests in various parts of the country, as they were demanding that they should be paid festival allowance in accordance with the new wage structure. The protest however, aroused many adversities like worker's conflicts with police, suspension of manufacturing activities, road blockades, wreckages and casualties.

The BGMEA leaders, who pleaded the factory owners to clear all the outstanding dues of workers, also sought the Home Minister's assistance in this regard.

Reacting to the BGMEA's request, the Home Minister pleaded the workers not to turn aggressive and indulge into destructive activities. She assured the workers that all their dues would be cleared.

She also stated that, in any case if any problem transpires, it would be sorted out through joint efforts of both the parties.
