The outdoor clothing and equipment market is booming. In response to strong growth over the last few years, the Swiss mountain sports specialist Mammut is opening a new European central warehouse near the German town of Memmingen. Amounting to 22.5 million euros, this investment is intended to boost the company's performance even further in the future.
The last few years have been characterised by strong regional growth, in particular in the markets of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, USA, Japan and Korea. This positive development is posing increasing challenges for international logistics, previously managed over several locations. Methods for improving the warehousing situation had been a topic of discussion for some time. The solution was found in the form of a plot of land in Wolfertschwenden, 15 km from the town of Memmingen. An investment of 22.5 million euros has been allocated for the construction of a new building. Work is expected to be complete by the end of the company's anniversary year in 2012.
On an area extending over 44,000m2, the company will initially build around 2,000m2 of offices and 8,000m2 of logistics space. The automated warehouse, with around 120,000 carton storage locations, is equipped with a 600 metre conveyor system and 9 lorry docking stations. In total, the new building will have 35 logistics workstations and around 70 administration workstations.
Concentrating warehousing operations within the EU brings benefits mainly in relation to customs procedures - avoiding double payments of duties and generally simplifying international shipments. The new warehouse is being built to meet the future needs of the Mammut Sports Group and will replace all existing warehouses in Germany and Switzerland. This will allow Mammut to guarantee to quickly and efficiently serve increasing worldwide demand in the future.
Kaspar Tanner laid the foundations of the company in 1862 with the establishment of his traditional ropeworks in Dintikon near Lenzburg. The Mammut Sports Group AG is now an innovative company which develops, manufactures and sells mountaineering, outdoor pursuits and snow sports products. In addition to its central headquarters in Seon, Switzerland (since 1992), where around 230 people work, the Mammut group has branches and subsidiaries all over the world. An extensive network of agents handle global distribution.
