Early this year, after 18-year-old Fatima was overworked to death in a garment factory in Bangladesh where workers were routinely beaten, kicked and paid as little as 11 ½ cents an hour, we launched a campaign challenging the world's third largest retailer. Many of you wrote letters to the giant German retailer, Metro Group, demanding change.
Today the manager of the factory has been fired along with the abusive supervisors, workers are now being treated with respect and paid correctly, they have access to clean water, bathrooms, health care and maternity leave, and they are organizing a union. Moreover, Metro Group was forced to admit that its worldwide factory auditing process was a failure and had to be completely revamped.
Recently, the NLC has been contacted by Wal-Mart workers in the U.S. asking for help. It was exactly like our research in the developing world. The isolation and fear were palpable. Workers snuck into our hotel room to give their testimonies. Last month the NLC exposed Wal-Mart's punitive sick leave on ABC's Good Morning America-seen by 14 ½ million people-and in the New York Times and Washington Post.
Today, we are joining forces with a growing grassroots coalition led by Moms Rising, which has 1.2 million members, and the NLC. Our goal is to reach 100,000 signatures on a petition demanding Wal-Mart improve their draconian sick leave policies, which drive employees to work no matter how sick or contagious they may be.
The United Steelworkers Union is generously providing the NLC with free office space and technical support. This means that not one cent of your donation will go toward overhead. Every dollar you contribute will go into the struggle to defend worker rights.
Anyone who contributes $50 or more will receive a copy of the NLC's new video documenting the horrific conditions endured by Bangladesh's 30,000 shipbreakers, including children, who are paid just 22 to 32 cents an hour to do one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.
Together we will continue to make a difference, providing solidarity to some of the world's hardest-working but poorest and most exploited workers. It is never enough, but we can be proud of what we've done.
