Join us on a Cultural Journey to explore where these symbols are derived from historically, and how they have evolved over time, to have meaning and provide identity for Maya women today. This is a study trip, to be lead by a leading expert in Maya textile iconography.
Visit the villages of Magdalenas, San Andres Larrainzar, Chamula, Zinacantan, Tenejapa to learn of the unique weaving styles and dress trends of these Highland Maya Villages.
The History and Use of Natural Dyes in the Americas: A Hands-On Workshop in Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca, February 2-10 Learn of the historic importance of cochineal, indigo, purple Murex and other dyes found in nature.
This hands-on workshop will show us how to extract, prepare and use these dye recipes. Included is a visit to a cochineal production enterprise and the Botanical Gardens. We will visit the Mitla ruins and other sites to learn about the pre-Hispanic design motifs that continue to be used in weavings today.
