Virginia's last textile major on the way out

Many Southside and Southwest Virginian states have been hard hit with the closing down of textile industries.

The latest Dan River sale to an Indian company, Gujarat Heavy Chemicals Inc, was a signpost of this last great US textile region.

Dan River employed over 14000 in Danville alone in the past, and now plans to move the remaining 1100 jobs to India.

Since the factories are closing down everywhere, finding jobs is becoming ever so difficult.

Some companies have shifted their production overseas where it is cheaper and more profitable.

Textile factories in towns and cities like Bassett, Chilhowie, Danville, Henry, Martinsville, Mecklenburg and Pittsylvania have all been shutdown.

As a result, the surrounding businesses that attended the workers like diners, groceries, bars, barbers and so on, have also gone into a slump.

The Virginia Employment Commission has released data revealing that the textile industry has hit an all-time low.

Textile industry in Virginia offered maximum employment over last 31 years from 1949 to 1987.

Mayor John Hamlin informed that by March, the unemployment numbers will swell further.

Yet, he believes the state is strong enough to survive the Dan River move.
