Disney & ICL tie up for jeans & kids wear

Walt Disney is to form a partnership with Indus Clothing Ltd (ICL) to manufacture and market `Disney Jeans' in India.

ICL has inked a licensing accord with the Walt Disney Company for the enterprise and is proposing to invest Rs 21 crore in it. This investment is part of the company's strategy to launch a greenfield facility in Uttaranchal where it will be manufacturing one lakh pieces.

Targeting the 4-14-year-olds, ICL has decided to make turnover of Rs 120 crore by the end of 2007. The apparel and fashion accessories with belts and bags will be delivered through stand-alone shops in the metros and towns.

ICL intends to begin with 20 such outlets in the next year and increase the figure to 50 by 2008.

Indian kids' wear market enjoys the share of approximately 15 percent of the total apparel market and is absolutely unexploited. ICL is focusing on clothing for kids who are aware of brand and are looking for something exclusive, said Mr Harpartap Singh, Director, ICL.

ICL looks forward to capture suitable market share for itself and have the first-mover advantage as it expects invasion of other international brands in market.

With the growth statistics for the kids' wear market set at 30-40 percent in the coming years, Disney Jeans hopes to implant the Disney brand in Indian children.

Though the jeans will not hold any of the typical Disney character add-ons, the company believes that the brand itself will be the selling point of the apparel.
