Cotton growers seek compensation for their crop losses

Cotton growers in Hudeidah requested the President to instruct government organisations to pay damages for their loss this season.

The appeal came after the Ministry of Agriculture and the General Authority for Textile and Weaving turned a blind eye to their promise to grant loans to growers and help in expanding their cotton plantation.

Signed by 120 growers from 25 agricultural societies in Hudeidah, the petition revealed that growers were informed of the President's instructions to enlarge cotton plantation in 2004 - 05 seasons.

Describing the reason for compensation, growers said crops were destroyed by insecticides in their farms.

The growers added that they communicated to the Ministry of Agriculture to look into the matter and hold officials who winked at the crises, responsible.

The Minister announced ten Yemeni Riyals (six US cents) per kilo of cotton, but such promises have been withdrawn.

The growers appealed the Government stick to its promise of increasing the cotton prices and settle their debts.
