Indigenous efforts on to meet surging cotton demand

Bangladesh requires 1.5 million bales of cotton yearly. The production this year is projected at 124,000 bales, which shows significant shortfall.
Local media on Tuesday reported that cotton cultivation was carried out in about 50,000 hectares.
About 115,000 bales of American variety of cotton were produced from 35,000 hectares, and 9,000 bales of local variety from 15,000 hectares.
The Cotton Development Board and banks extended loans worth 7 million taka (US $107,700 ) along with seeds at a reduced rate to cotton farmers to boost production.
Farmers have put up a proposal requesting the government to supply improved cotton seeds that reduces cotton harvest to a shorter duration, compared to harvesting period of six months.
The Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council has been requested by the Agriculture Minister M K Anwar to evaluate the possibility of cotton farming under the given scenario, and whether its continuation is a worthwhile proposition.
