Cotton requirements of the country are mainly fulfilled by imports from countries like the US, Australia and Brazil.

In August-December period, the total cotton imports were 435987 bales, a 13.1 percent decline from 2004.
Though cotton imports from the US dipped 23.5 percent to 154676 bales, those from Australia rose by 16.9 percent to reach 146185 bales. Brazilian imports went up 24 percent to reach 58343 bales.
