Naila Hussain, a Lahore-based Environment and Development Consultant stated in her reports that excessive use of pesticides are taking toll on the health of cotton pickers and farm workers in southern Punjab, India.
Hussain presented her studies at a 'Picking and Pesticide Poisoning, Working Conditions of Cotton Pickers' conference hosted by Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI).
She said that pesticides overuse caused eye infections, skin irritation, kidney problems and respiratory diseases such as asthma among cotton pickers.
She also blamed the multinationals for selling pesticides without providing proper knowledge about its use and its effects on health and environment.
Dr Karin Astrid Siegman of SDPI reports that women workers in the sector lacked alternative income sources and low bargaining power because of poor education, poverty, gender discrimination and labour surplus.
