USDA scales down cotton production estimate

Based on lower market arrivals from Maharashtra and southern states, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has lowered cotton production estimates to 23.5 million bales for 2005-06.

But Cotton Advisory Board's estimate remains unchanged at 24.23 million bales.

All India market arrivals through February 18, 2006, are estimated at 16.7 million bales compared to 17.8 million bales of last year.

Punjab recorded arrival of 1.73 million bales to 1.35 million bales of last year, Haryana recorded 1.11 million bales compared to 1.18 million bales last year, Rajasthan arrivals were at 0.90 million bales to 0.84 bales recorded last year, Gujarat recorded 5.45 million bales to 3.96 million bales of last year, Maharashtra arrivals were at 2.50 million bales compared to 4.70 million bales of previous year, Madhya Pradesh was at 1.28 million bales with 1.25 million bales the previous year, Andhra Pradesh recorded 2.25 million bales against 2.73 million bales of last year, Karnataka arrivals were at 0.32 million bales against 0.52 million bales of previous year, Tamil Nadu recorded 0.19 million bales with 0.25 million bales recorded last year and loose cotton was at 0.85 million bales compared to 0.90 million bales the year before.

Market sources report that heavy rains during October and November caused damage and delayed market arrivals in the affected states.

Presently around 1,50,000 bales per day arrivals is slated to continue through early April, said market sources.
