Farmers should get valuable price for cotton as they received in maize so that they remain competitive, said Kadoma West Member of Parliament, Zachariah Ziyambi.

He also added that cotton prices should be seven times higher that of maize as there are more taxes on cotton than the maize.

If farmers would not get adequate prices then there would be a chance that they might give up cotton farming, Zachariah informed.

Government is planning to meet the Cotton Promotion Council and other stakeholders to discuss the price for cotton.

Last year farmers got $4,500 per ton which is very low, according to the farmers.

Ziyambi told farmers not to export raw cotton but to add value in it.

He also suggested companies that they should start processing plants to convert raw material into finished products, by doing so it will provide employment to the locals.
