Downtrend in the cotton yarn sector that was visible in December 2005, extended through January 2006, as the production was continuously sliding.
INEI Monthly Survey of Spinners revealed that the total cotton yarn production in January was pegged at around 3,269 tons which represented over 2.9 percent year-on-year drop, although it was an improvement from December 2005.
Cotton-blend yarn output also fell in January by 8.5 percent to reach around 130 tons.
Country's textile and apparel output was also recorded low in the same month.
Cotton fabric output plunged 11.6 percent while that of cotton blend fabric dropped almost 11.7 percent in January 2006.
Knit fabric output also represented a steady decline while the apparel production fell 5.2 percent.
Apparel sector is struggling to hold on to its export markets, especially the US, with stiff competition from Asian countries like India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Indonesia.
Cotton apparel exports to the US declined 6.2 percent in January.
