Cotton companies were directed to stop exploiting farmers by selling inputs to them in foreign currency. It does not make any sense for the companies to sell inputs to farmers in dollars and buy their cotton in Zambian Kwacha, according to Chief Mwanachingwala of Mazabuka in Zambia.
He said the operation tantamounts to theft and must be blocked immediately.
Reduction in the price of cotton from K1,200 to K900 per kilogram has driven many farmers from growing it, hence he suggested that companies appreciate position of farmers as major stakeholders in the development of the cotton industry and should therefore extend all support to them.
