Bt cotton trials in an advanced stage

Kenya is moving towards introducing genetically modified (GM) cotton variety, as the country takes steps to revive the once vibrant cotton sub-sector.

Research on Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) cotton currently on field trials.

The Bt subspecies being used in the trials, kurstaki, is active in controlling a number of chewing insects (Lepidoteran) pests in field plantations.

Aim of such trials is to establish efficacy of protein variety, Cry IA(c), on target insects under field conditions where pest pressures are experienced.

Researchers expect cotton varieties carrying this particular gene will exhibit resistance to bollworm.

Further, the project sets to evaluate efficacy of Bt on cotton bollworms, study effect of Bt on natural enemies and other non-target arthropods and to evaluate risk of intercropping with Bt cotton. It also seeks to evaluate economic advantages of Bt cotton.

Cotton production in country has recorded a decline since 1986, when production was of 70,000 bales which has come down to just 20,000 bales in 2000.

Decline is attributed to damage caused by cotton pests with losses of up to 32 percent on cost of production.

Liberalisation of sub-sector led to diminished regulatory and monitory functions of Cotton Board of Kenya.

Removal of subsidies to cotton growers meant that local farmers sell their produce in the same market with farmers from countries which receive governmental support.

Introduction of Bt cotton will help reduce production costs. This is because it enables plants to protect them from key target insect pests. The insecticidal proteins produced by Bt are also toxic to major lepidopteron pests.

Bt toxins in cotton plants greatly reduces need for application of broad-spectrum insecticides, said Dr Charles Waturu, project's principal investigator.
