Department of Agriculture licenses trial of GM cotton crop

Recent trial of genetically modified (GM) cotton has been granted a license by the Department of Agriculture.
The cotton will be planted in the East Kimberley in Western Australia this week.
The crop can be grown across about 40 hectares of land at research station in Kununurra.
This trial programme of GM cotton started in 1996 with the aim of producing acceptable yields in different seasons.
This decision of department would give prospective growers confidence in the crop.
John Moulden, a senior official of the department, says the techniques used to grow the cotton are improving each year.
Last year the department got nearly 10 bales per hectare, which was a record in the country, he said.
