Speaking at a meeting of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the Mozambican Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Alfredo Namitete, said opposed the subsidies provided by developed countries to their own cotton farmers.
Namitete informed realistic solutions should be pulled out to tackle the problems in the cotton sector in order to raise access to global markets.
Based on this proposal, the EU has already taken tangible actions by creating the EU-Africa partnership to support African cotton producing countries.
The African group has been consulting with the WTO to eliminate trade hurdles and government subsidies in the developed countries.
This meeting was organized by the NGO Oxfam-America, with a support of the Southern and Eastern African Trade Information and Negotiations Institute (SEATING), and the Association for Organic Agriculture, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development.
