Coming close on heels on the meet between the G8 industrialised countries deliberating on African aid, the US President has challenged Europe in no uncertain terms on scrapping subsidies.
He said, "Scrap your massive farm subsidies and America will follow suit."
Currently, the US Government supports its cotton farmers in particular, offering billions of dollars worth subsidies that has drawn protest from Brazil, among other countries crying foul and claiming business losses for their farmer community.
US farmers get subsidies to the extent of US $230 per cotton acre, at present.
President Bush said elimination of subsidies and opening up free trade with Africa would remove the need for third world aid to the region.
The G8 leaders meet gets underway in Edinburgh in Scotland later today.
