Punjab Kissan Board, President, Khurshid Ahmed Kanju confirmed that the Cotton Crop Assessment Committee (CCAC) was forced to cut down the target production for this season from 13.82 million to 12.41 million bales, as a result of the recurrence of Cotton Leaf Curl Virus (CLCV) infection.
This virus restricts the healthy growth of the crop and reduces the production significantly.
Khurshid explained that CLCV appeared around 5-6 years ago, and with no resistant seeds or countering pesticides, is rapidly spreading. Same is the case with mealy bug attack that was first noticed before around 14 months.
Farmers Associates Pakistan (FAP) is urging the Government to support researchers and develop ways to counter these problems.
Surveys reveal that almost 75 percent of the cotton growers, who grossed in over 25 maund per acre yield, could barely earn 5-10 maund.
