The Lok Sabha was yesterday informed by the Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar about the record cotton output for the year 2004-05 that reached 23.20 million bales.
Owing to this, downward pressure on prices is being experienced in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra, where the government has undertaken substantial procurement of cotton in 2004-05, Pawar said.
He said Cotton Corporation of India has carried out significant procurement to save the marginal cotton growers in major cotton producing states.
Expiry of textile quotas in January, this year, has thrownup tremendous opportunities for the trade and cotton growers to increase their repsective output, he viewed.
