In a move to popularize cotton growing in kharif season under crop diversification programme, the government farms will grow cotton in "off" season.
About 100 hectares of land lying in Midnapore West, Western part of Burdwan, Birbhum, Bankura and Purulia districts of West Bengal (WB).
This year, after a trial for three years in government farms, for the first time in the state, cotton is to be introduced as a substitute crop in the kharif season. Earlier, the rabi-summer season was the period of crop diversification programme. Cotton was considered a substitute crop in the 70s.
ADO-Headquarters (Cotton), Mr Ashis Sarkar informed that the concentrated cotton development programme in the kharif season has been taken under mini mission-II programme of technical mission on cotton.
To popularized the programme among farmers, the state agriculture department is also working out proper marketing strategies.
Under mini mission-III, the marketing related issues would be more focused. The Cotton Corporation of India has already assured to purchase the entire output, informed officials.
In addition, if the programme is successful where paddy cannot be grown during this period, that area will also covered under the programme.
