International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) commenced its 66th General Assembly Meeting at Izmir on October 22.
During the meeting, State Minister Kursad Tuzmen assessed that the two major factors which will define the future of cotton production in Turkey are the current discussions on domestic support with the World Trade Organization (WTO) and export incentives.
Cotton sector in Turkey was once very significant, largely because it ranked seventh in world cotton production, second in imports and fourth in consumption. Recent developments in irrigational and agricultural technologies have tremendously reinforced cotton production since 1990s.
Mr Kursad also stated that efficient and skilled work force together with easy accessibility to the markets gives Turkey an added advantage in cotton production. However, ICAC believes that financial assistance to the agricultural sector has also greatly helped in promoting cotton units.
