Taiwan's spinners imported a total of 1,337,085 bales of cotton during August 2004-July 2005 period, showing year-on-year growth of 28.3 percent.
This was lower than the record of 2001/02 at 1,530,546 bales, imported then.
The performance this year has been impressive despite decline in Mill cotton use and indicates the capacity of Taiwan mills to cover their future requirements that have been steady since prices began to rise since August lows.
US varieties dominated the total import volume with 679,816 bales at 50.8 percent, whereas African Franc Zone variety stood second with a total of 216,070 bales. India (88,626 bales), Brazil (82,695 bales) and Pakistan (64,862 bales), were other top suppliers of cotton to Taiwan.
