CRDC to focus on fibre quality for this year

Narrabri based The Cotton Research and Development Corporation (CRDC) has published its 2004-05 Annual Report which highlights key R&D and industry achievements in the last financial year.

The report shows that 2004-05 was a year of both challenges and opportunities for the cotton industry and the Corporation.

Some Corporation and industry highlights of 2004-05 include:
CRDC's total 2004-05 R&D investment was $12.6 million.

122 R&D projects managed in six key research areas – People and Knowledge, Integrated Natural Resource Management, Crop Protection, Farming Systems, Breeding and Biotechnology and Value Chain.

2005 produced record breaking yields, with a 22 per cent increase comparing average yields for 1995-2000 with average yields for 2001-2005.

2005 resulted in a better than predicted crop size of 2.9 million bales.

14 new CSIRO varieties were developed and released in time for the 2004 planting season with a further 8 developed for 2005.

A major review of 'Extension, Education and Training' undertaken in conjunction with the Cotton CRC.

4 Wincott training and field days held to improve capacity of women in the cotton industry.

Looking to the future, CRDC's Executive Director, Bruce Finney states that CRDC is committed to continuing to strategically invest in and drive R&D outcomes that improve the industry's profitability and environmental performance. CRDC will be working closely with government, industry and the research community in the forthcoming year to achieve these outcomes.
