Recent floods in Punjab, destroyed cotton sown in an area of around 9,200 acres along with the paddy crop transplanted on thousands of acres. Standing crop over an area of 2,000 acres was also damaged severely in Faridkot district alone, due to floods, informed officials from the Department of Agriculture.

Cotton is the major crop produced in south western districts of Punjab, including, Faridkot, Moga, Mansa, Ferozepur, Sangrur, Bathinda and Patiala. And the crop affected were of Doka, Tehna, Kameana, Veerewala, Nanagla, Chameli, Dhidhi regions, and of Mandwala, Dhurkot, Jeewanwala and Aulakh villages in Faridkot.

Crops in these regions are grown in low-lying areas, where the flood-water remained stagnant and due to bright sun for the past few days, the stagnant water warmed up and damaged the crop. The crop could also get affected by pest attack on account of rain that fell recently.

Farmers of these regions sought compensation for the crop damage as they had sown BT cotton seed, which was very expensive and not easy to re-sow. Meanwhile, an advisory has been released by Punjab Agricultural University in which it has asked the farmers to spray cobalt chloride in the affected areas.
