Initiative to increase output in cotton producing belt

Cotton cultivators in the Central Corridor are likely to boost their production and sales in next season, which automatically would hike their earnings. A ginnery in Singida has resumed its production activities.

Also, a campaign to promote farming of organic cotton, ease liquidity concerns, contract farming and provide adequate marketing support has also been undertaken.

An agreement inked between a farmer and buyer is called contract farming and has the potential to increase cotton yields and in turn production.

All the six regions in Central Corridor have experienced difficulties in marketing the crop, lack of distribution ability and scarcity of raw material. The authorities in their wake to reverse these conditions are restarting the ginneries and providing credit relief to crop processors.

As against this season's output of 90,000 tons, the lint cotton's production is seen reaching 260,000 tons over the next five years.

Also rise in cotton production has lead to a rise in earnings of cotton cultivators, which has risen from Sh218,000 in 2006 to Sh350,000 this season.

The Cotton Corridor is also to get a training centre for training farmers on cultivation of organic cotton.

Also just a few years back, the country has also launched a programme to boost its cotton production ability from 700,000 bales to 1,500,000 bales by 2015 and also enhancing the productivity from 750 kgs per hectare to 1, 500 kgs per hectare.
