In the third quarter of 2007, US apparel imports from Bangladesh remained nearly stagnant. It is believed that political instability and stiff competition from rival countries like China and Vietnam have been the major reason behind this negative trend.
Compared to the present year, Bangladesh in 2006 surfaced as the largest supplier of denim apparel to Europe accounting for nearly 27 percent of its market share.
Domestic manufacturers are stressing immensely on exports of denim fabric and jackets. In the past four years, the overall production of denim has increased from 28 million meter per year to 200 million meter in 2006.
Officials from Bangladesh Textile Mills Association asserted that the easy availability of local denim fabric and the advantage of offering competitive prices have widened the scope for Bangladesh to acquire newer markets.
In addition to this, limits imposed by US on exports by certain countries have further strengthened Bangladesh's denim sector.
The overall position of Bangladesh textile industry is quite strong and if this trend continues, the country is sure to make a mark in the international arena.
