The Delhi High Court recently sought response from the Indian government and Amazon on a plea seeking to prohibit the re-entry of Chinese fashion brand Shein into India through sale of its products on Amazon. A public interest litigation (PIL) by Ananttika Singh has sought a direction to Amazon to suspend its partnership with Shein until the ban imposed last year is not lifted.

Fifty nine Chinese apps and brands were banned by the India on June 29 last year for being prejudicial to the interest and sovereignty of India. As Shein was part of that list, the PIL said sale of Shein products in the country should be totally prohibited.

The court, however, refused to pass any interim order to stay the sale at this stage.

The court was informed that there was an advertisement on Amazon which publicised the sale of Shein products on its platform as part of its their Prime Day sale and in spite of a representation made to the central government, no steps have been taken yet to prevent the sale of Shein products.

The matter would be heard next on August 20.

Fashion e-commerce retailer Shein is taking significant market share by slashing design-to-production times with the help of machine learning. Shein accounts for 28 per cent of US fast fashion sales, up from 14 per cent last year and has reportedly overtaken fashion giants like H&M, Zara and Forever 21.

At $10 billion in 2020, its global revenues have doubled every year for the past eight years. Based on its mobile-first philosophy, Shein consistently tops the charts in app store downloads, user engagement, and social media presence.
