E-commerce’s share of retail sales in the western Europe region jumped from 10.1 per cent in 2019 to 13.4 per cent in 2020, and is further expected to accelerate to 14.4 per cent this year, according to a recent report. Furthermore, the digital sales will cross the $700 billion mark by 2025,contributing $758.46 billion or 15.9 per cent of western Europe’s retail sales.

Following a year of lockdown-related growth last year, retail e-commerce sales in the region will continue to rise through 2025, the US-based market research firm Insider Intelligence said in its report. By the end of next year, e-commerce sales will account for 14.8 per cent of total retail sales and hit nearly $660 billion.

This is a significant upward revision from the previous forecast, which estimated that e-commerce sales soared by 26.3 per cent in 2020 and would remain below $580 billion in 2022, the report mentioned.

“The pandemic led retailers to quickly build out infrastructure to support the increase in e-commerce sales. The advent of this infrastructure, in turn, has accelerated western Europe’s shift toward e-commerce,” the American company added. “As much as it grew in 2020, e-commerce will make up a smaller share of retail sales in western Europe this year than in Asia-Pacific (where that share will hit 29.6 per cent) or in North America (where it will be 15.2 per cent).”
