Applications are now open for Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC’s) prestigious and globally-recognised technical education pathways, with online teaching starting in October 2021. The call has gone out to the world’s dyehouse, laboratory, and factory managers to put forward their promising junior staff members to study for a (SDC) qualification in 2021.

The SDC is the outstanding provider of colour education, offering a range of internationally-recognised coloration courses and qualifications. Increasing numbers of companies are funding employees through entry-level qualifications to degree-equivalent awards, allowing them to learn as they earn, and places are available for more participants to join them. And the courses’ well-established video lecture, seminar and one-to-one tutor support system, which has been in place for several years, means that the ongoing pandemic cannot affect course delivery and student progress.

With the SDC, textile dyers at any stage in their rising career can upskill in processes involved in applying colour to fibre, learning while they are earning, to become industry-leading technicians. Offering training in all technical and scientific aspects of dyeing, the courses begin at entry-level with the Foundation in Textile Coloration Certificate (FTCC), which requires only a standard secondary education in science subjects, according to a press release by SDC.

Upon completion, a student can then move on to the Textile Coloration Certificate (TCC), or, alternatively, start here upon evidencing a qualification in a science subject at post-secondary level. When this certification has been achieved, a participant can progress to the degree equivalent course, the Associateship of the SDC (ASDC). This leads to the career pinnacle status of Chartered Colourist (CCol) following a further two years of practical application and study, when clearly evidenced. The SDC is the only organisation in the world able to award Chartered Colourist status.

“The need for employees able to understand the complexity of the chemical processes that take place in a dyehouse has never been greater, with the challenges of chemical safety and sustainability high on everyone’s agenda. Training in the disciplines of colour and textile chemistry while a person is working and gaining practical experience is available with the SDC's education pathway courses, from school leaver through to degree-level. By learning chemistry related to the role, a dyer or colourist can be the person who makes a difference and have a positive effect on the environmental impact of the coloration industry,” Andrew Filarowski, technical director at SDC said.
