Logan Wilson founded Campus Mobilization of Surplus and International Care, or Campus M.O.S.A.I.C., to "unite the campus under the purpose of service to the poor by finding creative ways to transport university surplus to places where shortages exist domestically and abroad."
The group has 15 active members and welcomes new members throughout the year. More than 300 campus and community members participated in M.O.S.A.I.C.'s first event: "Davis Outreach Project: Woven with Warmth." Participants made blankets for the Davis Homeless Shelter from surplus materials donated by the university. Says Wilson, The event was amazing.
The mayor of Davis, Ruth Asmundson, and Chancellor Vanderhoef attended, and we were able to turn eight rolls of surplus fabric from the UC Davis textile department into 65 full-size, double-thick blankets. The group is currently working on sending boxes of supplies to orphanages in Nicaragua and Mozambique.
"What is amazing is that the entire surplus we send comes directly from the student population or the university," says Logan. "If we choose to see our blessings as an opportunity to serve those who have almost nothing, the opportunities are endless."
