NID opens new campus in Gandhinagar

As part of expansion plan, National Institute of Design (NID) has started building a new postgraduate campus at Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat State.

Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath laid the foundation stone for this campus yesterday.

The upcoming campus will be spread over 11,362 square meters and the building will cost around Rs195 million.

Campus will consist of a jewellery and automobile design centre along with geo-visualisation, lifestyle accessory design, transportation and information design centres.

Every year, 500 designers pass out of from branches of this national level institute across the country as against requirement of 8,000 designers in industries, services, commercial and development sectors.

Ajay Dua, NID governing council Chairman, said that country should have more such design institutes and the intake of students in this field should be raised.

He also informed that NID has increased intake capacity of students from 75 to 250 over the year and also plans to admit 1,200 students by 2011.
