Leading promotional neighborhood department store Mervyns survey reveals that the majority of women (58 percent) feel that wearing a particular pair of shoes actually boosts their self-esteem.

And, when shopping for that special pair of shoes, women want the best of both worlds.

They feel both style (38 percent) and comfort (32 percent) are important when selecting new footwear.

Coinciding with these survey findings, Mervyns has introduced a new line of women's footwear called SM New York.

From gold sequined sandals and studded strappy slides to cut-out flats and platform wedges, ranging in price from $40 to $45, this new line allows women to affordably keep in step with the latest trends.

These and other relevant findings are part of a recent 500-respondent survey of women aged 18 and older.

The survey commissioned by Mervyns and conducted by Dennis H Tootelian, Ph.D., cites women's attitudes toward, and preferences for, shopping and wearing footwear.

Survey highlights include:

-- Sole Searching - The main factors women look for when purchasing shoes are style (38 percent), comfort (32 percent) and price (24 percent).

When it comes to influencing a woman's decision to shop for shoes, more than one-third (37 percent) indicate that shoe sales are the biggest influencer, followed by her friends (31 percent) and what she sees in fashion magazines (27 percent).

-- Keeping in step with fashion - More than 40 percent of women buy three to five pairs of new shoes in an average year and more than one in four buy at least six pairs, which means that the majority of women buy at least one pair of shoes per season.
