Wilsons the Leather Experts April same-store sales fall 7.9%

Leather retailer Wilsons The Leather Experts Inc reported sales of $17.1 million for the four weeks ended April 29th 2006 as compared to $18.6 million for the four weeks ended April 30th 2005.

Year-to-date sales for the company's stores decreased 11.4 percent to $74.7 million compared to $84.3 million for the same period last year.

Comparable store sales decreased 7.9 percent for the four weeks ended April 29th 2006; this decrease compares to a 13.0 percent increase in comparable store sales for the four weeks ended April 30th 2005. Year-to-date comparable store sales decreased 10.8 percent compared to an increase of 15.8 percent for the same period last year.

Michael Searles, Chairman and CEO, said, "Our comparable store sales results continue to be negatively impacted as we transition our merchandise mix in preparation for our fall strategic initiatives. In addition, our aggressive promotional posture during the month of April last year generated challenging comparisons. We remain focused on executing strategies that will ensure a successful holiday selling season."

The company is also scheduled to release its first quarter 2006 results after market close on Tuesday, May 16th 2006. A conference call to discuss the company's first quarter results will be held at 4:30 p.m. ET that same afternoon.
