Hair bands are the popular accessories among women of all ages. The bands are not used to hold hair as it had been the purpose of the accessory in the 80's, but are just placed on heads softly and is just an accessory.
The trend had started about 2 years ago at Paris and Milan Collections and slowly caused a ripple effect to celebrities and now to the Japanese females.
Most admired celebrity like Jessica Simpson, and Nicole Richie wearing hair bands are picked up in some of the most popular magazines.
Japan's fashion could be divided to several categories, but the hair band boom exists in all the categories. A few examples would be: the young girls wear 2 slim hair bands, the so-called “Gals” who look up to LA celebrities wear scarf-types, the OL-Office Ladies style is with rhinestones, or Emilio Pucci style scarves, and the street-style is to wear sunglasses like hair bands.
Seibu Department store has increased stores space for hair bands and sell over 100 types, 4 times the amount they usually hold. Those in their teens and in the 20's prefer wearing 2 slim hair bands around 3 to 5 mm.
Those in their 30's to 40's prefer floral or geometric prints in a turban-type hair bands. Other department stores are unexpected sales, thanks to this trend.
