Japan Fashion Week in Tokyo

Japan's fashion strategy meeting was held and agreed on strengthening invitations of buyers for the upcoming fashion week in September. Japan's Fashion Week has been quite unpopular by overseas buyers with only 10 attending the first and 20 in last years second show.

Their strategy for increasing the number of buyers and supporting the business side of the collection, the association is going to do 3 things: receive support from JETRO, advertising in American press, and renting out spaces for free to young and upcoming designers.

The first tie up with JETRO, Japan External Trade Organization, will consist of JETRO advertising in their base in Milan, New York, Paris and London. This is in hopes of increasing interest by buyers from department stores and prominent journalists.

Advertising in American press will be mainly in WWD's Section II. This will include an article on Japan's textile industry and Japan Fashion Week. WWD's wide focus by the fashion industry would help the industry workers know more about Japan's industry.

The third strategy of renting out free spaces to young and upcoming designers includes tying up with event halls and allowing about 8 designers picked out by the Japanese journalists and supports them. With little financial aid, many young designers cannot join in on the event and by giving allowing them to compete for slots agitate the competition and increase growth among them.

With the little attention given to JFW, the industry is working hard to somehow bring more focus to Japan's fashion. In June, Tokyo's Fashion Designer Association CFD has announced that they will hold a collection for S/S 2007 for designers who are not able to join the Japan Fashion Week in Tokyo. The fashion week in Tokyo will be held in September and the new collection in October for 3 days.
