Tiffany, Zale top the 2005 Triversity Top 100 Retailers list

Tiffany & Co., Zale, and Helzberg Diamonds' parent company Berkshire Hathaway Inc., have been announced top 1,2,3 position retailers, according to 2005 Triversity Top 100 Retailers ranking.

The ranking are authorized and published in STORES magazine, a monthly brought out by National Retail Federation.

"This past year shook up the retail industry," said Rick Gallagher, STORES publisher and NRF vice president. "Stores are looking for unique ways to expand their product lines in an effort to differentiate themselves.

Retailers are no longer just competing with other stores in their segment, they are competing with everyone, making the environment extremely challenging," he added.

World's largest retailer, Arkansas-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc., topped the list with 2004 sales of $288.19 billion, an 11.4 percent increase from 2003. Home improvement retailers also fared well with Home Depot in second place with 2004 sales of $73.1 billion, a 12.8 percent increase from 2003.

Department Stores were successful in reinventing their identity and shedding the image of mall anchors. Wal-Mart (1,) Costco (4,) and Sears (9) were the only three top 10 stores that sell diamonds and jewelry.

Other retailers featuring in the top 100 list were with their rank in () are:

J C Penney (9), Federated (20), TJX (21), May Department Stores (23), Dillard's (37), Nordstrom (39), Saks Stores (41), QVC (44), Neiman Marcus Group (66), Mervyn's (72), Berkshire-Hathaway Retail (84), Belk (87), Zale (91) and Tiffany & Co. (95).
