11th five-year plan gives China Leather Industry a boost

The Chinese Government's current Five-Year Plan (the 11th) proposes a new direction for the development of China's Leather Industry in the period of the Plan: 2006 - 2010.

Capitalising on the success of the leather industry during the previous Five-Year Plan (2001 – 2005), the current Plan directs the industry to move from quantity to quality, through such means as branding, developing and using environmentally friendly products in exports.

In response to these guidelines the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) has developed reference standards designed to control the quantity of exports while improving quality. Better resource usage, pollution management and local brand development are the core themes of the new standards.

The steady development of China's leather industry consolidates its status as the world's largest exporter of leather materials and related commodities. This expansion is expected to continue. Last year (2006), China's exports of leather commodities and footwear products rose by 2.4% to US$23.3 billion and 14% to US$21 billion respectively.

China's overall economy is expected to develop further under the 11th Five-Year Plan with an average growth rate of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of 8%. The overall market conditions for China's leather industry are cause for optimism. Taking full advantage of these buoyant conditions the All China Leather Exhibition (ACLE), China International Footwear Fair (CIFF) and Moda Shanghai provide a unique platform to meet and network with Chinese buyers, and a chance to experience this surging market in person.

In September 2006 15,117 buyers visited ACLE, CIFF and Moda Shanghai. The three fairs attracted 1,260 exhibitors, from 37 countries and regions. There were 23 group pavilions.

Organised by APLF Limited and CLIA, the upcoming ACLE, CIFF and Moda Shanghai will be held at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre, Pudong, Shanghai, P R China from 5 – 7 September 2007.
