APLF - Materials, Manufacturing and Technology (MMT) and Fashion Access (FA) ramped up the style with its first-ever full-fledged runway show featuring the première Fall/Winter 07-08 collection of noted Indonesian designer Ika Butoni. The 30-minute fashion show served as the opening activity of APLF - MMT and FA.

Ika began her fashion career when she exhibited at a fashion trade show in Hong Kong in 1985. A shy young girl, she produced a line of highly original designs that owed much of their creativity to her Indonesian roots.

Now, in the 23rd year of the APLF show, she began APLF - MMT and FA with a breath-taking collection she had designed especially for the occasion. The designs and the exquisite embroidery owed their creativity, both to her Indonesian origins and to the artistic traditions of Bali, where she makes her home.

During the show, Ika presented a 24-ensemble collection that reflected the style directions for the coming Fall/Winter season. The Collection started with old Sepia prints of her ancestors, followed by an architecture story based on ancient archeology, rich in antique brownish tone, Peacock green with rich colours changed the mood afterwards and the final peak of the show was the 12 sets of the rich red phoenix collection.

The fabrications used wool, silk, cotton silk and synthetics, enriched with head accessories, scarves, necklaces, belts, handbags, long socks and stockings.

The necklaces worn by her models are from a Balinese cottage industry designed to help the economy of the country. She has taught her own domestic helpers, as well as others, to create the necklaces as a source of extra income for them, to help relieve poverty in the region.

Married to an American, she combines Asian traditions with the topicality and demands of the new world. Her business partner since 1993 is John Keilman from Holland. While maintaining strong links with Hong Kong (she is a committee member of the HK Fashion Designers Association) where her designs are worn by some of the city's most powerful women, she has developed her business into a global network and now exports to 35 countries.
