Strong Brazilian Real affects denim export

Cotton denim mills were forced to concentrate on sales aimed at domestic apparel companies due to the rising of the Brazilian currency - Real.

This resulted in cotton denim sector recording a fall in exports for the second consecutive year in 2005.

Cotton fabric exports in 2005 were 33,756 tons, a 4.9 percent decline and the lowest recorded volume in several years.

Argentina turned out to be the biggest market with exports at 9,982 tons; a 14.1 percent rise.

Netherlands registered exports of 5,213 tons, showing a decline of 11.8 percent.

Paraguay and Chile recorded better export performance where as Venezuela and Colombia registered sharp decline.
