India’s first fashion fellowship focused on water stewardship was launched recently to help emerging designers develop a holistic understanding of sustainable fashion. Spearheaded by The ReFashion Hub and YWater, the fellowship is conceptualised by sustainability coach Rushva Parihar and jewellery designer and spatial design strategist Riddhika Jesrani.

ReFashion Hub is a collective working to bring together multiple stakeholders invested in wastewater reuse and management in the textile industry with long term positive climate impact. The stakeholders include fashion businesses, textile bodies, industry leaders, young designers, artisans and consumers.

YWater is a research-based impact foundation that aims to catalyse young people to take action for the sustainable development goals in India. Established under Madat Charitable Trust in 2010, Ywater is a queer-led organisation with youth-advocacy at the core of its ethos.

The five-week fellowship is open to apparel, footwear, and accessory designers. Deadline for applicants February 15.

Fellows will develop a sustainable capsule collection to be judged by Nonita Kalra, Parmesh Shahani and Akshay Tyagi with the winners awarded ₹1 lakh.

The fellowship is part of a series of upcoming initiatives to raise awareness and drive the conversation about water usage by the fashion industry. It offers a platform to young designers to think about the impact of the fashion industry on water and look at building their careers with a focus on environmental sustainability, particularly water stewardship, a press release from the organisations said.

At the end of the fellowship in April, each fellow will conceptualise a capsule collection, across textile, footwear or accessories, that incorporates the principles of sustainability and water stewardship and present it to a panel of judges.
