She was diagnosed with an advanced form of stomach cancer earlier this month, Vanderbilt’s son Anderson Cooper said in a statement.
It was in the 1970s that Vanderbilt first ventured into the fashion business. She licensed her name to Glentex for a line of scarves. Then in 1976, she launched a line of designer jeans carrying her signature embroidered on the back pocket, as well as her swan logo, for Murjani Corporation. Her jeans were more tightly fitted than other jeans of that time.
Subsequently, Vanderbilt’s logo appeared on dresses and perfumes, and she also launched a line of blouses, sheets, shoes, leather goods, and accessories.
After selling the rights to her name to the Murjani Group in 1978, Vanderbilt launched her own company GV Ltd. Jones Apparel Group acquired the rights to Gloria Vanderbilt jeans in 2002. (RKS)
