Harnaaz Sandhu, an Indian model and beauty pageant titleholder, was crowned Miss Universe 2021 at the pageant held in Israel on Sunday. The beauty queen won the final round in a mermaid-style bejewelled gown designed by fashion designer Saisha Shinde. The dress featured stones, sequins and embroidery with a plunging V neckline and a thigh-high slit.

Sandhu complemented the floor-length sheer gown with silver-coloured strappy peep-toe pumps, silver drop earrings and statement rings.

Shinde shared the various stages involved in the making of the gown on her Instagram stories with the caption “Sleepless nights! Endless pressure! One girl’s dream on the line! One woman’s grit to make perfection! Totally worth it!”

“This has been an experience of a lifetime! The past three weeks have been a dream getting to know these exceptional women, and I’m honoured to be chosen among them to represent this inspiring organisation. I hope to serve the global community to the best of my ability in the year to come," Miss Universe Harnaaz Sandhu said in a statement.

Miss Universe India, Harnaaz Sandhu, credits her mother, who broke generations of patriarchy to become a successful gynecologist, for inspiring her to follow her own dreams.

Shaisa Shinde, formerly Swapnil Shinde, is an India-based transwoman fashion designer known for styling several Hindi film actors including Anushka Sharma, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Shraddha Kapoor. She has also done costume designing in films like ‘Fashion’.
