Kashmir's Lassipora Industrial Estate is being offered incentives along with additional facilities like a government-run effluent treatment plant by the State Government.

It will cater to the requirements of leather product customers every where and amaze them with their low cost and high quality finished leather goods.

An international shoe company, number of Chennai-based unit owners, National and International leather goods manufacturers have proposed to set up plants for finished leather goods here.

Kashmiris being non-vegetarian, consume more than four million sheep and goats. If the leather is used in the state itself instead of selling it outside, then the internal leather industry can get a boost, said Shakeel Kalandar, President of the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce, in Srinagar.

Earlier, there have been several setbacks in the absence of government support and low end machinery, said the small-scale unit owners. But now the government is setting up a large complex for the leather industry.

Industrial Growth Centre (IGC), has plans to welcome entrepreneurs from within and outside the country to set up shop and use the land, infrastructure, labour and raw leather to meet their manufacturing needs.

With more than 2.5 million workers, Indian leather industry is the second largest employer in the country. It is estimated to generate a turn over of approximately $4 billion a year.
