Romain Urnel gets Grand Prix for Menswear

The curtain has fallen on the 19th Dinard International Festival of Young Fashion Designers, was presided over by Marithé Bachellerie, founder of the Marithé+François Girbaud label with her alter ego François Girbaud.

Messe Frankfurt France presents two prizes at the festival: the Grand Prix for Menswear with the Texworld exhibition and the Prize for Ethical Fashion with the Ethical Fashion Show. This second prize rewards the designer who best incorporates the ethical approach in the concept for their collection. Over the course of three days the seaside town a taste of the fashion world with the attendance by fashion personalities and the different shows, like the designers' showroom, the conference on ethical fashion and the main catwalk show.

12 international designers, with a good turnout from the France, presented their collections in front of a jury of professionals. The members of the jury have awarded:

• the Menswear Grand Prix to the young French designer Romain Urnel for his collection with its urban/gothic styles, that is marketable just as it is. Black predominated with silhouettes that were fluid and deconstructed. His collection will be presented at Texworld next September, just as those from the winners of previous competitions were. The prize was awarded to him by Michael Scherpe, President of Messe Frankfurt France, who said “Romain Urnel's collection is imaginative and totally wearable for men who attach importance to how they look. A collection that is relevant, ideal for the market”.

• the Ethical Fashion Prize to the French duo Cécile Montoussé and Juliette Imbert thanks to their knitwear collection christened “Gypsy Bikeuse” where recycled materials were called for. The jury was won over by their community-based approach and their project for setting up workshops to help women in reintegration. They were given an envelope containing 5000 euros by Messe Frankfurt France and a stand at the Ethical Fashion Show for next September's show at the Carrousel du Louvre.

Isabelle Quéhé, Director of the Ethical Fashion Show presented the prize to the two winners and emphasised that “It is encouraging to see designers giving consideration to sustainable development as was demonstrated by each silhouette. The ethical approach, long viewed as restrictive, is crucial today”.
