FIT students partake in 'Red Garment' design contest

FIT Fashion Design students are participating in the “Follow the Red Dress” contest, celebrating the best American up-and-coming fashion inspired by Spain's art and culture. Final garments will be on display during the Spanish Soho Mile, an annual event featuring fashion, footwear, and jewelry from Spain, presented by the Spain - U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Exclusively open to students of FIT, the contest required participants to submit red garment designs inspired by Spanish culture, history, art or fashion in three categories – art-inspired, eveningwear, and recycled. Finalists were chosen by FIT faculty.

The 13 finalists constructed and fabricated their garments with a stipend of $150 for materials and fabrics. Finalists include Maya Barash, Hyunsoo Kim, Lathajaya Kumar, Jihaeng Lee, Sunyoung Lee, Tania Leipold, Paolo de Marco, Miroslawa Morciniec, Sehyun Park, Miguel Pena, Daniel Seo, Maor Tapiro, and Jeffrey Todd.

Winners will be chosen in each of the three categories with first place winners receiving $1800, second place winners receiving $1300, and third place winners receiving $800.

Judges include Joanne Arbuckle, Dean of the School of Arts and Design of FIT; Modesto Lomba, Designer and President of the Association of Spanish Fashion Designers; Custo Dalmau, Designer; Alex Carrasco, Senior Editor Spanish V; Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, Designer; Ana Calvo, Founder and CEO Coolture; Gemma Cortijo, Executive Director Spain – U.S. Chamber of Commerce; and Lluis Solé, Chair of the Fashion Committee Spain – U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
