Continuing her unwavering passion to promote the traditional hand-woven textiles of India, Deepika Govind presents her Winter Festive 2012 Collection ‘Pop Patola’, on Indian Textile Day – August 5, 2012 – at Lakme Fashion Week, Mumbai.

Deepika’s collection this season is a tribute to the extraordinary weaving tradition of the Patola from Patan, Gujarat; albeit with a tongue-in-cheek Pop Art interpretation. Deepika’s design sensibility is as much driven by the process of design as the results.  She continues to revolutionize ethnic fabrics and designs, using Indian textiles in Western constructions. Thus, in ‘Pop Patola’, culture blends with style and modern-day icons.

The Story: Janvi Patel – A Voyage Through Patan And Patola: Janvi Patel has been a New Yorker for decades. Intrigued by her cultural lineage, Janvi embarks on a voyage to her hometown Patan in Gujarat, home of the vibrant Patola weave. Her translation of her heritage is captured through a fun-filled lens, thus injecting a delicious layer of irony and wit. Thread by thread, Pop Patola comes to life.

The Inspiration: Deepika Govind creates her new collection out of the vibrant woven Patola fabrics. “Pop Patola spells a new thought and dimension to my design direction,” says Deepika. “It is lively, happy, effervescent, with one foot in the mould of tradition, and the other, firmly rooted in the present.”

Collection Features: Hybrid forms, composite layers, ethnic detailing, rich texture blocking, trims and beading add playful elements to formal designs. The features of this collection include saturated bright colours, artful fabric manipulation, revolutionizing ethnic designs and haute generic fusing. Layers, both mock and real, abound. Pop design, both woven and printed, happens on the canvas of the traditional Patola. As always, it is a story of contradictions. Autumn is about dark, somber moods. Deepika’s own perspective too has been in exploring mysterious dimensions and, yet, the Patola is a celebration.

Offering: Replete with hybrid shapes –, the Petal, a Bubble, and a Balloon - all form a part of the Pop Patola celebration. Draped construction forms the foundation for the silhouettes that follow resulting in a line of short dresses, layered skirts, peplum blouses, round hemmed dresses, unique edition of a dhoti trouser, high-waisted wide legged trousers, volume based tunics and sarees, in a mélange of silk textiles.

Fabrics: A special edition of Patolas has been hand woven by master weavers from Patan especially for Deepika Govind’s new collection. Besides a variety of Patolas comprising both single and double ikats, the offering from Patan: the other textiles used in the collection are pure silks and satin silks.
