The New York City-based Hengst drew her inspiration for her "No Such Creature" dress design from the work of Israeli scientist Daniel Shetchman, who was awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his discovery of Quasi-crystals with their 10-fold symmetry.
Hengst was inspired to create the stunning new print based on the luminous attributes of these quasi-crystals. Her bold new design was printed on silk cotton voile to reflect the luminosity of the crystals.
Just as Schetchman faced the scepticism of his fellow scientists for years prior to his discovery, the emerging NYC designer Hengst faced many obstacles in order to bring her vision to print for "No Such Creature."
Notably, the intricacy of the design itself and the difficulty in creating the work using her chosen fabric of silk cotton voile led the designer to explore the craftsmanship of printers as far away as South Korea, only to learn that the process she needed for the work would be virtually impossible. "They told me that it simply couldn't be done," said Hengst.
